Orthotics & Foot Care
Your feet provide the foundation to your body and support you when you’re standing, walking or running. They adapt to the changing environment and physical demands to protect your bones, joints, soft tissues and spine from stress when you move. During your growth spurts your feet modify in size and shape yet over time with ageing and ongoing stress can deform and lose their structural integrity. This foot dysfunction can lead to chronic knee, pelvic and spinal distortions and exacerbate existing clinical conditions even those with no apparent relationship to the feet. One of the predominate changes in the foot which can require foot orthotics is the presence of pronation otherwise known as “flat feet”.
Benefits of orthotics
- Improve lower limb alignment
- Improve balance and positional sense
- Enhance sports performance
- Reduce injuries and fatigue
What is pronation?
Did you know that 77% of people suffer from moderate to severe pronation?
When the foot has lost any of its underlying arches and cause rolling in of the foot it is termed pronation and can create a flat-footed appearance. Flat feet are less shock absorbent, dysfunctional and make it more unstable base for everything above – the bones, muscles, ligaments and tendons of the entire body.
It can also lead to:
- Shifting of the body out of alignment
- Aches and pain in the feet, knee, hips, spine and shoulders
- Lead to injuries and problems like shin splints, Achilles tendonitis, plantar fasciitis, ankle sprains, balance issues and osteoarthritis
- Women with flat feet are 50% more likely than those with out to have lower back pain
- Up to 1/3 of people suffer from pronation
